The claim that Santa Claus was associated with the hallucinogenic mushroom Amanita Muscaria (fly agaric) and the Koryaks of Far-East Russia first originated with Robert Graves, in his book Difficult Questions, Easy Answers, Chapter 8, “Mushrooms and Religion”, pages 95-96 (Cassell, 1972)
